The San Antonio Spurs are rumored to be broadening their search for elite point guard talent this NBA offseason as they focus on building around Victor Wembanyama.

On “The Pat McAfee Show,” NBA insider Shams Charania from The Athletic and Stadium revealed the Spurs’ strategy to bolster their roster.

“Expect them to be linked with nearly every premier point guard hitting the market this offseason,” Charania stated during the show.

Previously, the Spurs had inquired about Atlanta Hawks’ Dejounte Murray before the trade deadline, demonstrating their ongoing interest in strengthening their point guard position.

Despite the Hawks keeping their dynamic duo intact and missing the playoffs, changes could be on the horizon, potentially making a star like Trae Young available. Multiple league sources have indicated to NBA Analysis Network that some within San Antonio’s organization are concerned about the lack of appeal other plays have in playing with Young.

Charania highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Young’s future with the Hawks, suggesting the Spurs are poised to make a significant move should the opportunity arise.

“The level of interest the Spurs are showing in top-tier guards indicates they’re serious about upgrading their team,” Charania added.

The addition of a seasoned point guard would synergize well with rookie sensation Wembanyama, who is rapidly proving to be a transformative presence in the league.

With Wembanyama’s ambitions to start competing at a high level immediately, acquiring a player of Young’s caliber could dramatically accelerate the Spurs’ transition from rebuilding to contending.

“Wembanyama has made it evident that he’s ready to win now,” Charania said. “The Spurs’ aggressive pursuit of a top point guard could be the key to unlocking his and the team’s potential.”
