Former Rockets coach Stephen Silas is a candidate to join Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla‘s staff of assistants this offseason, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Silas was recently spotted observing a Celtics practice and as Stein noted, was in Boston to watch the Celtics in Game 5 of their first-round series vs. the Hawks.
Silas, 49, coached the Rockets for three seasons before being fired earlier this month. He compiled a 59-117 record in Houston, including a 22-60 mark this year. The record, however, is largely a result of the Rockets going on a major youth movement and rebuilding.
Before coaching the Rockets, Silas spent 17 years as an assistant with the Mavericks, Hornets, Cavaliers and Warriors.
Silas is the son of NBA legend Paul Silas, who passed away in December.
“Definitely a hard year,” Stephen Silas said. “Death is hard when your person closest to you, the person who teaches you all about what you’re doing on a daily basis, you lose him, it makes it difficult. What made it easier was a group of guys in that locker room who wouldn’t quit, just tried hard and wanted to do the right things. And a staff full of people who I could share quiet moments with or lean on.”
The Celtics are currently the top remaining seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and tip off against the 76ers on Monday.
