'The Landlord' pumps up streaking Wizards

The Washington Wizards have won five straight games, the most recent three without injured star forward Kristaps Porzingis — an impressive feat. Perhaps the biggest reason for the streak is the play of 6-foot-10 center Daniel Gafford.

Gafford became a fan favorite two seasons ago when he was a key cog on the Wizards' run to a playoff berth. He is an old-school big with a limited skillset outside the paint, but his impact on the game is usually far greater than his impact in the stat sheet.

The 2019 second-round Arkansas product is mostly known for the energy and hustle he brings to the court. Gafford is a classic "glue guy" who does all the little things for the Wizards (23-26).

But Gafford can be more than just an X-factor. He can take over games when asked to step up, as he has recently.

During Porzingis' three-game absence, Gafford averaged 13 points, nine rebounds and more than three blocks — well above his season averages (8.3/5.1/1.3).

Gafford is questionable for Monday night's game against the San Antonio Spurs with an illness. However, the timing has worked out well, as Porzingis is scheduled to return from his ankle injury.

With Porzingis back, Gafford's numbers are likely to revert toward the mean.

But while he was out, Washington fans can thank the man they call "The Landlord" for keeping the Wizards afloat...and then some.
