Thunder land major bench upgrade in trade with Hornets

The Oklahoma City Thunder have acquired Gordon Hayward from the Charlotte Hornets, as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. They are sending Tre Mann and Davis Bertans in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

The veteran forward is likely seen as the ideal sixth man for the Thunder's upcoming playoff run. They have been one of the most exciting teams in the NBA this season. They sit joint first in the Western Conference alongside the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets.

Hayward is a multi-talented forward. He's a legitimate three-level scorer. He can create his own shot and playmaker for others and he's a switchable defender, capable of guarding multiple positions. He also comes with deep playoff experience, courtesy of his tenure with the Boston Celtics.

The Thunder aren't likely to be concerned with Hayward's current contract situation. He is in the final year of his current four-year $120M salary. The Thunder haven't given up any major pieces to acquire the veteran forward. However, if Hayward has a strong second half of the season, there's a chance they could look to retain his services long-term.

Nevertheless, Oklahoma will be adding an experienced veteran to its young core. Hayward plays a selfless brand of basketball. He will accentuate the talents around him. He's also had a strong season for the Hornets. In 25 games, he's averaged 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists, shooting 46.8% from the field and 36.1% from the three-point range.

If the Thunder can get the deal over the line, it will significantly upgrade their bench rotation. Hayward is a former All-Star. He's highly competitive and will give the team a reliable new dimension on the wing. However, the coaching staff will need to be cognizant of his long-running injury issues and manage his minutes accordingly.

Hayward's arrival in Oklahoma will likely be one of the more impactful roster moves we see ahead of the 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline. His presence within the Thunder's roster could have a significant impact on how successful the franchise is once the playoffs begin, which is precisely why the front office has made the move to bring him in.
