The Minnesota Timberwolves are up 2-0 vs the Phoenix Suns , in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, but life got even better on Wednesday when news broke that Wolves’ bench star Naz Reid has been named 2024 NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

It’s an incredible achievement for a big man to win NBA Sixth Man of the Year, an honor that’s normally held for microwave guards who can come in and control bench play with the ball in his hands.
In fact, the last time a center won this award (technically Reid is considered a center) was 35 years ago (1988 – Roy Tarpley). The last time a forward won it was 2020 (Montrezl Harrell); the last time a power forward took it home was 2011 (Lamar Odom.

Naz played in 81 games this season, but only came off the bench for 63 of them, after Karl-Anthony Towns tore his meniscus and had to sit out for a month. When that happened, Naz slid into his starting spot seamlessly.
On the season, Reid averaged 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, shooting 47.7% from the field, including a career-high 41.4% from three. It’s very likely this award will be a one-and-done thing for Naz.
He proved that he’s worthy of a starting spot on most rosters and the Wolves could need to replace KAT, given the luxury tax issues they will have starting next season.
