Trail Blazers reportedly give Chauncey Billups five-year head-coaching deal

The Portland Trail Blazers named Chauncey Billups the franchise's new head coach late Sunday night.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Billups was given a five-year deal that includes a team option on the last season. The 44-year-old will be introduced at a Tuesday news conference, Wojnarowski adds.

The Trail Blazers offered Billups the job on Friday night and worked on a deal over the weekend. After team chair Jody Allen and president of basketball operations Neil Olshey met with Billups in Seattle on Wednesday, they were "convinced" he was the right candidate, according to Wojnarowski.

The hiring of Billups in Portland has been met with immense backlash because the former Los Angeles Clippers assistant faced a rape allegation in 1997 when he was a rookie with the Boston Celtics. He denied it and was never charged criminally, but he settled a civil lawsuit years later.

The Trail Blazers investigated the allegation against Billups, who encouraged the examination, Wojnarowski adds. Portland found nothing that they believed disqualified Billups from becoming the franchise's next head coach.

The news of Billups' hiring was also met with a report from Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, who says Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard could request a trade due to the immense backlash from the Trail Blazers' head-coaching search and his concerns over whether a championship contender can be built.
