Victor Wembanyama, Spurs stun Suns with last-second comeback

The San Antonio Spurs never led against the Phoenix Suns — until there were 1.2 seconds left.

Victor Wembanyama had four points in the final 49 seconds as the Spurs came back from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the Suns, 115-114. After the scoring explosion from this June’s No. 1 pick, Keldon Johnson won the game by stealing the ball from Kevin Durant and laying the ball in for the game winner.

The French teenager finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Once again, Wembanyama caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring six points on four shots. For the year, he’s scored 26 of his 65 points in the final quarter, shooting 11-for-14.

The young Spurs outscored the Suns, 33-19, in the final quarter, as Durant’s 26 points and seven assists weren’t enough to carry Phoenix, who were missing Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.

Wembanyama did his best against Durant, his favorite player, but the Suns’ All-Star defied even his eight-foot wingspan to make shots, though the Phoenix offense stalled late.

The only thing Wembanyama couldn’t do Tuesday night was answer Charles Barkley’s questions about a San Antonio delicacy, the churro.

The more Wembanyama learns about the league, the better he’ll get in the first three quarters. The Spurs are probably okay with their rookie taking his time to learn about churros.
