Warriors are preparing to lose the architect of their dynasty

The Warriors have huge decisions to make this summer. They may have to make them without their longtime GM.

Bob Myers is in the final year of his contract as Warriors head of basketball operations, a post he has held since 2011.

In January, The Athletic reported that Warriors owner Joe Lacob and Myers were far apart on contract talks. Particularly in regards to salary, where Myers ranks somewhere between sixth and eighth among NBA executives. And besides Pat Riley, none of them have won four titles.

However, the money may not be as relevant as Myers’ desire to do something new. While he’d clearly be a top candidate for any basketball operations job, Shams Charania reports that Myers has been offered “lucrative positions” in other sports leagues and with private equity firms.

Private equity might seem like a stretch, until you consider that the Warriors sold for $450M the year before they hired Myers. This year, Sportico valued them at $7.56B. That’s quite a rate of return.

Myers has developed strong relationships with Draymond Green, who can opt out of his contract this summer, and Stephen Curry, who Myers called “more of a partner” than a player two years ago.

Now Myers could be on his way out as the Warriors decide on the futures of Green, Jordan Poole and second-year player Jonathan Kuminga. And possibly head coach Steve Kerr, whose own contract only has a year left.

Once Myers decides to stay or go — likely in the next weeks — the focus shifts to Kerr’s own future. With Klay Thompson’s contract up next summer and Green’s future undetermined, Golden State could be approaching a “Last Dance” scenario for their dynasty in 2023-24.

And without Myers. The league and the Warriors are beginning to believe his last dance already happened in San Francisco.
