Warriors set Alamodome scoring record
The San Antonio Spurs hosted a record crowd against the Golden State Warriors. That wasn't the only Alamodome milestone Friday night.
Golden State scored 144 points against the Spurs, shattering the old Alamodome record of 129 points, set by the Spurs against the Warriors back on Feb. 26, 1995. Eight Spurs scored in double figures that night, led by David Robinson's 30 points on 14-of-19 shooting.
How did the Spurs run up the score so badly? Rebounds. San Antonio made only four three-pointers — the game was different in 1995 — but outrebounded the Warriors 59-28. Dennis Rodman had 22 rebounds by himself, nearly matching Golden State in just 26 minutes.
Of course, the attendance record was the bigger deal, as the Spurs made a concerted effort to break the old record of 62,046, set when Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls played the Georgia Dome in 1996.
The Spurs were celebrating their 50th season by returning to the Alamodome, where they played from 1993 to 2002, and won their first title in 1999. During that time, the arena was partitioned with a curtain, and the upper deck was usually closed off. But during big events like the NBA Finals, attendance would approach 40,000 fans.
The Alamodome has also hosted the NCAA Men's Final Four in 1998, 2004, 2008 and 2018, when the layout shifted. With the court moved to the center of the arena, more seating was available, and attendance exceeded 70,000. The Warriors' Donte DiVincenzo scored 31 points in the 2018 final, winning Most Outstanding Player. He kept it going Friday night, scoring 22 points off the bench and dishing five assists.
With the building also hosting the Women's Final Four in 2002, 2010 and 2021, San Antonio has proved the building can excel with big basketball events. Beyond the 50th anniversary celebration, which included a halftime performance by Tag Team of "Whoomp! (There It Is)" fame, this also lays the foundation for an All-Star Game bid.
Dallas set a record by hosting 108,713 fans for the 2010 All-Star Game. If the NBA wants to go big again, the Spurs have proved they can put up big attendance numbers. Plus, if they need a musical act, we are pretty sure Tag Team's calendar is open for All-Star Weekend in 2025.
