Giannis Antetokounmpo took one dribble from half-court and dunked against the New York Knicks. Some might argue he also traveled.
The Bucks star made a nearly-impossible reach to grab a loose ball, then took it all the way to the rim. But in the process, he clearly carried the ball and also took many steps, though he still crossed the whole court in nine strides.
Of course, this is the NBA, where the traveling rule is more of a suggestion than a strict rule. The league redefined the rule in 2019 to explicitly allow two steps, and informally a player can take three if it ends with a dunk.
And Giannis doesn’t need the extra steps to throw down an impressive dunk.
Antetokounmpo finished with 35 points on 15-for-22 shooting as his Bucks defeated the Knicks, 146-122, to get a spot in the in-season tournament semi-final Thursday in Las Vegas.
He won’t have to worry about taking too many steps they’re either. Whatever traveling violations happen in Vegas stay in Vegas.
