What is a triple-double in the NBA?

In basketball, one of the more impressive individual accomplishments is a triple-double. Any player who records a double-digit total in three of the five major statistical categories — points, rebounds, assist, steals and blocks — earns a triple-double.

What NBA players averaged a triple-double?

For most NBA players, one triple-double in a season is a major highlight. Two players in NBA history — Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook — accomplished the milestone so frequently that it became part of their identities. In the 70-plus-year history of the NBA, they are the only players to average a triple-double for a season.

In the 1961-62 campaign, Robertson, then with the Cincinnati Royals, averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists. He came close to replicating that feat several times throughout his Hall of Fame career, the closest being in 1963-64, when he was 0.1 of a rebound average from averaging a triple-double for the second time in three seasons.

In the 2016-17 season,  the Oklahoma City Thunder's Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. Westbrook’s historic season earned him league MVP. Despite his triple-double achievement in 1961-62, Robertson finished third in the MVP voting, behind Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, who won the award.

What NBA players recorded a quadruple-double?

Four players in NBA history — Nate Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon — have recorded a quadruple-double, a double-digit total in four of the five major statistical categories. Olajuwon had the distinction of accomplishing this twice, both within 26 days of each other in March 1990.

Several players have come close to producing a quadruple-double, the most recent being Golden State's Draymond Green, who recorded four points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals on Feb. 10, 2017.
