Why Orlando Magic's Paolo Banchero is the clear-cut ROY

The No. 1 overall pick did not disappoint in his debut season, and hardware is likely to follow.

Orlando's Paolo Banchero led all rookies in points per game (20.0), total points (1,437), 20-point games (40) and 30-point games (6), according to StatMuse. He finished third in assists (3.7) and fourth in rebounds (6.9).

And just like he started, Banchero finished atop the NBA's Kia Rookie Ladder.

The 20-year-old is just the sixth rookie in the last 50 years to average 20 points, six rebounds and three assists — joining elite company in Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Walter Davis, Blake Griffin and Luka Doncic.

Banchero's 20.0 PPG and 40 20-point games resembled the start of another NBA legend: LeBron James.

While paralleling the greats, Banchero's resume also outshined his peers.

The power forward led Orlando (34-48) in points, rebounds, free throws and minutes. His dominant on-court presence demanded attention and opened the floor for teammates.

OKC's Jaden Williams, who finished second on the Rookie Ladder, did not lead his team in any major statistic. He averaged 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists — all less than Banchero.

Third-place Walker Kessler led Utah in blocks (2.3), and averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists.

Magic point guard Markelle Fultz emphasized Banchero's impact in Orlando and believes he's the clear-cut favorite for Rookie of the Year.

"I don't really think there's any discussion about it," Fultz said.

Banchero would join Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal and two-time champion Mike Miller as the Magic's third ROY.

Regardless, Banchero said he "did everything that I wanted to do" in his rookie year and plans to "take it to another level" as a sophomore.

The Magic may have missed the playoffs, but the future is undoubtedly bright in Orlando.
