The Wizards have signed free agent guard Jared Butler to a two-way contract, the team announced in a press release.
Butler, 22, is 6-foot-3 and has appeared in 48 games, including six with the Thunder last season. He played in 42 with the Jazz as a rookie in 2021-22, after the Pelicans selected him with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
He has also spent plenty of time in the G League, posting combined averages of 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds with the Oklahoma City Blue and Grand Rapids Gold last season.
Butler was a standout guard for Baylor University during their 2021 NCAA championship season, but a perceived heart ailment seemed to cause his draft stock to drop. He signed a two-way deal with the Thunder this past March.
As our Brandon Santomauro wrote, Butler is now “entering his third year in the league, and the combo guard looks healthy and poised to help contribute to the Wizards off the bench.”
The Wizards waived guard Quenton Jackson to open up the spot for Butler, as we relayed here.
Washington has now filled two of its three two-way slots with Butler and forward Eugene Omoruyi. This marks the first season teams can carry three two-way players, up from two in previous years.
