The Timberwolves are signing forward Matt Ryan to a two-way contract, according to Shams Charania and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

To create room they will waive two-way shooting guard A.J. Lawson, per Krawczynski.

Ryan, 25, is 6-foot-7 and was waived by the Lakers on Dec. 1. He was in his first year with LA after appearing in one game with the Celtics as a rookie last season.

Ryan played 11 games with Los Angeles, averaging 4.3 points and 1.3 rebounds. is likely best known for hitting a fadeaway corner 3-pointer at the final buzzer, sending a game against the Pelicans in early November into overtime. The Lakers eventually won.

The Timberwolves are desperate for perimeter shooting, as Krawczynski noted, and that is indeed Ryan’s specialty.

Lawson, 22, is 6-6 and appeared in one game with the Timberwolves. He went undrafted in 2021, then signed with the Hawks, and was waived not long after, ahead of last season.

He initially signed a two-way deal with the Timberwolves in July, before being waived in October. His latest two-way deal came on Nov. 26.

Lawson is likely to remain with the Iowa Wolves of the G League.

Two-way players are eligible to appear in up to 50 NBA games before a teamneeds to sign them to a standard contract.
