The Minnesota Timberwolves couldn't overcome the Devin Booker-less Phoenix Suns on Monday. Even though Wolves star Anthony Edwards had a 40-point outing, it wasn't enough, as the Suns took over, 108-105. In the middle of the third quarter, Minnesota's starting center Rudy Gobert was ejected.
This was the referee's ruling after the Frenchman hit big man Mark Williams with a forearm midway through a dunk. It was a close game, and the Wolves would've preferred having their defensive anchor in the game. Nevertheless, they did their best against the Suns. Gobert exited the game with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Following the bout, Edwards was asked about his thoughts on missing Gobert for the rest of the game after his ejection. The team tried to make up for his absence, but no one could do what the four-time Defensive Player of the Year.
“You can’t make up for Rudy’s absence, when he’s in the game it’s like they don’t want to go down there and finish. So of course he’s truly missed when he’s not on the court,” Edwards said.

Minnesota still had the size advantage over the Suns with the frontcourt duo of Julius Randle and Naz Reid. However, the team couldn't maximize its size advantage. Phoenix did most of its damage from beyond the arc and made 36.4% of its attempts.
Their Monday game against Phoenix is the second of their three-game season series. Their third matchup will be on March 17, and they need to win to avoid a sweep. For now, they're focused on their upcoming contest against the Golden State Warriors on Friday.
