The Dallas Mavericks have a solution to their ongoing problems if Jason Kidd accepts.
With Kyrie Irving set to miss the majority of the 2025-26 NBA season due to his torn ACL injury, the Dallas Mavericks have a problem at the point guard position.
Many believed that the Mavs signed D’Angelo Russell this offseason to counter that problem, but head coach Jason Kidd seems to disagree.
After all, Kidd hasn’t started D’Lo once during the Mavs’ first five games of the season. Instead, he has relied on Cooper Flagg as the team’s starting point guard.
Last season, when the Mavericks faced a plethora of injury troubles, they were in need of a point guard.
At that moment, Brandon Williams stepped up as a solid PG for the team. In fact, Williams had Irving’s support.
Fast forward to now, and Williams has once again proven that he can be the starting PG for the Mavericks, as the 25-year-old had a terrific performance against the Indiana Pacers.
Coming off the bench, Williams logged 22 minutes as he finished the night with an efficient 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists during the Mavs’ 107-105 win over the Pacers.
This performance should be enough for coach Kidd to at least give Williams a chance as the starting PG while moving Flagg to his natural position.
Sure, Flagg was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but he’s still a rookie in the most competitive league in the world.
On top of that, Flagg is just 18 years old and has played as a small forward his whole life. Does he have the tools to one day become a point guard? Yes.
But playing him out of position during his formative years as an NBA player is doing more harm than good for Flagg. So much so that Flagg is no longer viewed as the consensus ROTY.
Flagg may be averaging 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, but he is shooting just 41.0% from the field and 26.7% from the three-point line.
There have been games where Flagg has looked awful. So, coach Kidd, it’s time to end this experiment and let the rookie shine in his natural position, i.e., small forward.
