Ex-NBA star Shawn Marion against boycotting season: 'What'll that accomplish?'

Ex-NBA star Shawn Marion isn't too keen on players sitting out the remainder of the 2019-20 season, and he even said it'll ruin their chances of making a larger contribution in the fight against racism.

Some of the NBA's biggest stars, including Kyrie Irving, have made it known that they're unsure whether or not they want to resume the season amid the country's fight against systemic racism — noting their focus should be on fighting for social justice.

Marion, though, disagrees and says playing the remainder of the season could be the biggest platform for the players to make their voices heard. Marion said, according to TMZ:

"In order for you to advocate and go out here and show what you're fighting for and the causes, you need to be on TV. Social media is a great platform, but TV is a bigger platform because you can post whatever you post on TV, you can post to your social media platform.

"So, with the season resuming, it adds to that cause."

Marion has a point, too, as the NBA return at Walt Disney World will likely draw in a record number of viewers in total. As for sitting out and not playing, Marion doesn't agree with it.

"What is sitting out, boycotting, not playing the season," Marion said. "What is that gonna accomplish really?"

Regardless of players sitting out, the league is set to resume next month provided everything goes smoothly.

However, the recent spike in coronavirus cases in Florida could end up soiling the league's plans. Florida has been reporting over 3,000 cases every day this past week and even had over 4,000 cases on Saturday, which isn't exactly ideal for the NBA looking to head to the state for the season return.

Even Major League Baseball has pulled all teams out of their spring training facilities in the state due to the pandemic, so it seems the NBA could be in trouble if it doesn't handle things properly.

Whatever the players decide, their fight against racial inequality will be effective regardless of which route they take.
