A past comment from former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has resurfaced following the shocking trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Fans were quick to recall Cuban’s 2020 remark, where he humorously prioritized Doncic over his own marriage.
“If I had to choose between my wife and keeping Luka on the Mavs, catch me at my lawyer’s office prepping for a divorce,” Cuban said at the time, as reshared by Courtside Buzz.
His words, once seen as a testament to Doncic’s value to the Mavericks, have taken on a new meaning now that the franchise has sent their star player to the Lakers in a blockbuster deal.
The trade saw the Mavericks send Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.
Despite Cuban’s past devotion to keeping Doncic in the Mavericks, he no longer holds majority ownership of the franchise. The team’s new leadership, led by general manager Nico Harrison and governor Patrick Dumont, made the bold decision to move forward without the five-time All-Star, according to WFAA.
Still, many Mavericks supporters are struggling to understand the decision. As the dust settles on one of the most shocking trades in NBA history, Cuban’s past words serve as a reminder of how quickly things can change in basketball.
