Former UNC star sets G League franchise record amid run of strong play

Former North Carolina standout Armando Bacot went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft but has remained determined to carve out a path to the league. Now with the Memphis Hustle, the G League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, the 24-year-old has put together a solid campaign—one that reached another level over the weekend.

In a 125-117 win over the Santa Cruz Warriors on Friday, Bacot delivered a dominant performance, posting 34 points and 25 rebounds while shooting 13-of-21 from the field. It marked his second career 30-point game, but the rebounding total stole the spotlight, setting both a personal career high and a new franchise record for the Hustle.

He followed up with another impressive outing on the second night of a back-to-back, recording 21 points and 15 rebounds in a second victory over Santa Cruz. It was his third consecutive 20-point game and fourth straight double-double, further highlighting his current run of form.

Bacot’s contributions have fueled Memphis’ surge up the standings, winning seven of its last 10 games to improve to 12-10. The Hustle now sit fifth in the Western Conference, occupying a spot in the playoff picture.

After a five-year college career at UNC, the 6-foot-10 big man is making an impact in the NBA’s minor league, having previously represented the Utah Jazz in the 2024 NBA Summer League. Across 38 G League games this season, including the Tip-Off Tournament and regular season, he is averaging 15.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. His 221 total rebounds rank sixth in the league, while his 166 defensive boards are the second-most.

With the NBA season entering its final stretch, G League call-ups become increasingly common. Contending teams look to bolster their depth for the playoffs, while rebuilding franchises seek out potential long-term pieces.

Bacot, currently on a standard G League contract rather than a two-way deal, is eligible to sign with any NBA team. If his recent performances are any indication, front offices may already be taking notice.
