The Golden State Warriors, although on the older side of the NBA, are still determined to contend for a championship. Last season, the Warriors made a crucial move by trading for Jimmy Butler in a five-team deal. With his addition, the team had another go-to scorer and an excellent perimeter defender.
However, injuries became a problem for Golden State, especially in the playoffs, when Stephen Curry went down with a hamstring strain. This resulted in them getting eliminated in the second round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Numerous clubs have made roster improvements this summer. The Warriors, unfortunately, have not made any significant signings. Interestingly, the franchise lost one of its most productive role players in Kevin Looney. After 10 years with the same team, Looney signed a two-year, $16 million contract to play for the New Orleans Pelicans.
Looking at the Warriors, they’ve gotten even smaller now that Looney is playing for a different team. This could mean that head coach Steve Kerr is planning on putting the 6-foot-6 Draymond Green at the center for the 2025-26 season.
Because of this, former NBA player Channing Frye predicts that the Golden State Warriors will “blow it up” in the middle of the season. Frye shared his prediction on the latest episode of his podcast with Richard Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins, Road Trippin’.
“I hate doing this. I’m not being a troll. The Warriors blow it up halfway through the season,” Frye said. “…But look at the trend of where the NBA is going. OKC is a very tall team. The Cleveland Cavaliers are a tall team. Boston is a big team. Denver’s a big team. Minnesota’s a tall team. Houston is extremely tall. Golden State is still playing small ball — and I don’t know if that works anymore.
Playing small ball has worked for the Warriors before. However, their aging core doesn’t seem to fit what Kerr wants for the team.
With the departure of Looney, NBA insider Marc Stein believes the Golden State Warriors will sign a frontcourt player soon. The top player linked to the Warriors is Al Horford, who remains an unrestricted free agent.
Stein was on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs,” where he discussed the Warriors.
“My expectation is that one way or another, the Warriors are going to end up with both [Al] Horford and [De’Anthony] Melton on their roster,” Stein said.
Last week, the Golden State Warriors were expected to sign the veteran big man. However, a deal did not happen, and the team still hasn’t added anyone. Additionally, discussions with Jonathan Kuminga and the Warriors are still underway.
