The Minnesota Timberwolves showed promise over the past two seasons by making it to the Western Conference finals. However, in both occasions, the Wolves came up short. In 2024, the Anthony Edwards-led team lost to Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. This past playoffs, Minnesota returned but only lasted five games against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Edwards has been one of the top rising stars in the league, entertaining the fans with his out-of-this-world plays and leading the team to great heights. However, he’s been disappointed in back-to-back years at the third round of the postseason. Even with that, the former Georgia star doesn’t seem bothered and believes he can return to the same situation since he’s still young.

“So yeah man, we did pretty good this year and we just came up short again. We’ll try to do it next year,” Edwards said after losing to the Thunder in the conference finals.

Staying true to himself, the Timberwolves star continues to show confidence in himself. However, returning to the conference finals isn’t an easy feat.

In the latest episode of the podcast, “Road Trippin’,” former NBA center Kendrick Perkins addressed Minnesota’s situation. According to Perkins, he predicts that the star shooting guard could force his way out of the organization if they continue to fall short of making it to the Finals.

“If Anthony Edwards don’t reach the NBA Finals, he’s going to request a trade from Minnesota,” Perkins said (40:15). “The Anthony Edwards that just went to the Western Conference Finals two years in a row. If he doesn’t get to the Finals, he’s going to leave.”

Edwards has publicly expressed his loyalty to the Wolves multiple times. However, in their failed attempt to reach the NBA Finals twice, Perk’s prediction might come to fruition.

Kevin Durant didn’t want to play for the Timberwolves

Before Kevin Durant was traded to the Houston Rockets, the Timberwolves were among the teams interested in trading for him. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Wolves wanted to pair Edwards with the 15-time All-Star. Windhorst revealed that the team made an offer to the Phoenix Suns, but was declined after learning that the two-time MVP didn’t want to play in Minnesota.

The offer that the Timberwolves had for the Suns would’ve given the team another go-to scorer. Also, Phoenix would’ve solved their frontcourt issues earlier since Minnesota included All-Star center Rudy Gobert in the package.

The team also offered to trade guard Donte DiVincenzo, forward Terrence Shannon Jr. and the 17th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which turned out to be Joan Beringer. While Durant has a close relationship with Edwards after playing together in Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the veteran star saw the Rockets as a better fit.
