How Do Cavaliers Compare to Warriors Historically?

The NBA felt the wrath of the Golden State Warriors before Kevin Durant joined in free agency. Prior to Adam Silver's vision of parity came to fruition, the Warriors dominated the league. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson's blistering offense, mixed with a dominant defense, foreshadowed what's to come in the playoffs. Ironically, the 2024-25 Cleveland Cavaliers evoke memories of the 2015-16 Warriors.

Cleveland's 12-0 start is nearly halfway to the Warriors' 26-0 run to start the 2015-16 season. Instead of making flashy moves and turning over the roster, the Cavaliers upgraded their coach and depended on roster continuity. In contrast, many Eastern Conference contenders made numerous moves, ultimately facelifting their rotations. Similar to the 2015-16 Warriors, the Cavaliers depended on blossoming chemistry.

Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen comprise the team's core, boasting the best offensive and sixth-ranked defensive ratings. Moreover, Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson unlocked Mobley as an offensive presence rather than a one-way player.

Much like his former boss, Steve Kerr, Atkinson tapped into a roster booming with potential and did more than the previous head coach. While the Cavaliers winning 14 more games to match the 2015-16 Warriors seems far-fetched, the Eastern Conference is riddled with weak teams, indicative of the standings.

The current Eastern Conference three-seed is the 6-6 Orlando Magic, juxtaposed to the five teams under .500, comprising six to 10 seeds. Records are meant to be broken, especially when given a glaring advantage.

In a lesser-quality Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers have the continuity and balanced roster to challenge the 2015-16 Warriors for the historic feat, especially considering the Eastern Conference's weak competition.
