LeBron James could not hide his admiration, or slight frustration, over the San Antonio Spurs repeatedly landing franchise-changing big men.

The Los Angeles Lakers star pointed to a pattern that has shaped multiple eras of NBA history, with San Antonio going from David Robinson to Tim Duncan and now Victor Wembanyama.

For James, the remarkable part is not only the talent level. It is the mentality that connects all three players.

LeBron James says the San Antonio Spurs got lucky with David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Victor Wembanyama

Speaking on the recent episode of the Mind the Game podcast, LeBron James reflected on the San Antonio Spurs repeatedly landing generational talents.

“San Antonio continues to get lucky as f___ with these generational, talented, IQ, smart, but like, listen, ‘Keep the main thing the main thing.’ David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Wemby,” James said.

He added, “Guys who have this dead-serious mentality. They have these horse blinders on, and they’re like, ‘The mission is the mission.’ It’s all that matters, and it’s pretty remarkable to see.”

The point lands because the Spurs have built three different eras around No. 1 overall picks who arrived with more than just elite size or athletic ability.

Robinson gave San Antonio its first true superstar foundation, Duncan turned the franchise into a dynasty, and Wembanyama now represents the next version of that rare Spurs blueprint.

LeBron James sees Victor Wembanyama as the latest San Antonio Spurs star with a rare NBA mind

James’ praise for Wembanyama went beyond the obvious physical tools, because he focused just as much on how the French star understands the game.

“He has the ability to do things that we haven’t seen in our league ever,” James further stated. “His IQ, you could tell by the way he talks, by his demeanor, that he knows the game and that he was taught the game the right way.”

That is why Wembanyama fits so naturally into the Robinson-Duncan conversation for James. The Spurs have not simply landed talented big men. They have repeatedly landed players who were ready to be serious, organized, and franchise-defining from the moment they entered the league.

Robinson brought leadership and defensive dominance, Duncan brought calm control and championship consistency, while Wembanyama brings a modern skill set that stretches the limits of what a center can be.

James may call it luck, but his larger point is about the kind of luck every franchise wishes it had. San Antonio keeps finding generational players who understand the responsibility that comes with being one.
