The Dallas Mavericks have waived Nate Hinton, per Tim Cato of the Athletic.

The second-year guard out of the University of Houston had just re-signed with the Mavericks on a one-year, two-way contract on August 3rd. It’s a little surprising he’s being waived so soon after coming to that agreement, but deals like his aren’t guaranteed and easy to move on from if a franchise chooses to do so.

Hinton failed to stand out in the Las Vegas Summer League. He appeared in five games, averaging 7.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 6 rebounds. He also averaged as many turnovers (three) as he did field goals.

The past year didn’t offer a lot of opportunities for rookies like Hinton. There was no Summer League last offseason, as well as a shortened training camp, little practice time, and fewer opportunities to get reps in the G-League. Those circumstances made this year’s Summer League even more important, and Hinton just couldn’t break through when given the chance.

Hinton only appeared in 21 games last season for the Mavericks. He put up two points per game and not much else stats-wise. Here’s hoping he finds a place somewhere else in the league.
