Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic had dinner with head coach JJ Redick and team executive Rob Pelinka on Friday. Lara Beth Seager, Doncic's chief brand officer and business manager, also attended the meeting.
Los Angeles can sign Doncic to a four-year, $229 million contract starting on August 2. Doncic will make $46 million next season. He has a player option worth $48.9 million for the 2026-27 season.
According to NBA insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein, the Lakers are projecting nothing but confidence about signing Doncic to an extension. Doncic, who was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers in February, has some options at his disposal contract-wise.
"The maximum extension that the Lakers can offer Doncic this summer is a four-year deal worth nearly $230 million," Stein and Fischer wrote.
"Doncic, though, has one season left on his current contract and thus likewise holds the option of emulating Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell by signing a three-year extension (valued at $165 million) with a player option for Year 3 that would enable him to return to free agency in the summer of 2028 and negotiate a new deal in a higher pay bracket once he has accrued 10 years' of service time."
Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists with the Lakers in the regular season. The future Hall of Famer then put up 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game in the Minnesota Timberwolves series.
Despite having Doncic and LeBron James, the Lakers lost to the Timberwolves in five games.
Pelinka, though, is looking forward to working with Doncic for the foreseeable future.
"It's incredibly exciting to have the promise of him in our next decade of Laker basketball with being able to build a team around him and him being at the center of our franchise," Pelinka said during his end-of-the-season press conference. "Our partnership with him has been incredible. We're appreciative and grateful and can't wait to get to the work, really starting today, of getting ready for next year."
