The New York Knicks are exploring trade options for center Jericho Sims ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline, according to the New York Post. The team reportedly seeks a second-round draft pick in return for Sims, who has recently fallen out of the rotation.
Sims, 26, was inactive for Monday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, and head coach Tom Thibodeau has described his role as “game-to-game.” The Knicks have opted to use Ariel Hukporti for backup minutes in recent contests, further limiting Sims’ opportunities.
The former second-round pick in 2021 averages 1.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 11.6 minutes in 32 appearances this season. Despite his reduced role, Sims has garnered some interest around the league, according to the New York Post.
Sims is in the final year of a three-year, $5.7 million contract and is set to become a free agent this summer. His $2.1 million expiring deal could appeal to teams looking to add low-cost frontcourt depth.
The Knicks, operating above the first apron, cannot take back more salary than they send out, which may limit the types of trades they can pursue. Additionally, the anticipated return of Mitchell Robinson, recovering from offseason ankle surgery, could further reduce Sims’ minutes in the rotation.
The Los Angeles Lakers could be a potential landing spot for Sims, as they have been searching for a backup center to complement Anthony Davis. Sims’ elite athleticism and defensive abilities make him an intriguing option. Still, his offensive limitations and current role as a rotation player may pose challenges in finding a trade partner.
Sims has started three games this season, stepping in for an injured Karl-Anthony Towns. His most notable performance came in a loss to Orlando, where he logged 29 minutes, grabbed 10 rebounds, and scored four points. However, he has played sparingly since, with limited production in recent outings.
The Knicks have struggled with frontcourt depth for much of the season, primarily due to Robinson’s extended recovery. Thibodeau recently confirmed that Robinson is progressing toward a return to practice, which could bolster the team’s interior presence and make Sims expendable.
Sims’ future with the Knicks appears uncertain, but as the trade deadline approaches, New York’s market activity could clarify their long-term plans.
