Warriors Announce Roster Decision Amid Jonathan Kuminga Uncertainty

With the start of the NBA season less than a month away, the Golden State Warriors moved to re-commit several veterans on Sunday, all while restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga remains unsigned, a standoff that could reach a decisive point when his qualifying-offer (QO) deadline hits Wednesday, Oct. 1.

The front office confirmed commitments for Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton and has been tied to a multiyear agreement with veteran center Al Horford, plus rookie contracts for second-rounders Will Richard and a two-way for Alex Toohey; all moves that overlap the Kuminga timeline.

Before news of the Payton deal came through on Monday, ESPN's Bobby Marks highlighted that unless the Warriors extend Kuminga, the QO will expire on Wednesday, at which point he will remain a restricted free agent.

The 22‑year‑old wing and No. 7 overall pick in 2021 enters the 2025‑26 NBA season as a young core piece who has surged over the past couple of years.

In the 2024-25 playoffs, he averaged a career-high 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 23.4 minutes over eight playoff games, including a 30-point performance on May 10 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite this, he remains unsigned and absent from team events as a $7.9 million qualifying offer ticks toward its deadline.

Golden State put multiple multi‑year proposals on the table this summer, including two reported packages of a two‑year, $45 million offer and a three‑year, $75.2 million proposal with team options.

However, Kuminga’s camp has pushed for a deal containing a player option to retain control of his future; that demand has largely stalled progress and fueled trade rumors.

The only offer from the Warriors side that didn't include a team option was for three years and valued at just $54 million ($18 million per year).

The sides have not found a middle ground yet, and Kuminga’s choice to skip mini‑camp and media day underscores the tension, especially with the deadline just days away.
