49ers GM John Lynch: Jimmy Garoppolo is starting QB, Trey Lance 'pushing' for job

The San Francisco 49ers have made it clear that Jimmy Garoppolo is their starting quarterback. However, Trey Lance is doing everything possible to change that.

Niners general manager John Lynch told the "Murph & Mac" show that he's been impressed with Lance this summer but reiterated that personnel decisions are up to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"That's up to Kyle (Shanahan). That's up to our head coach," Lynch said Friday, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "He makes the decisions on who's playing and whatnot. But I think it's Jimmy's right now and Trey's pushing. I think that's where it's at."

Lynch added:

"(Lance has) been awesome. He's been everything we thought he would be and more. He was good from day one when he walked in here in the offseason, and I think a testament to what we thought he was and his work ethic."

Lynch previously noted that Garoppolo has been playing his best football this summer at training camp following Lance's arrival. It's quite clear the veteran doesn't want to lose his starting position unless he suffers another injury.

While the 49ers will continue to use Garoppolo as their starter this season, Shanahan admitted last week that Lance will play "situationally" this year.

The North Dakota St. product will make his preseason debut Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs. If he plays well, he might see more playing time than expected in 2021.
