'100 yards waiting to happen': WR Michael Gallup's return could boost Cowboys' offense

Wide receiver Michael Gallup could return this week for the Cowboys, who could use a boost to their depleted receiving corps.

“That’s 100 yards waiting to happen. And a touchdown,” Dallas' No. 1 receiver CeeDee Lamb told USA Today's Jori Epstein about Gallup, who hasn't played since last season because of an injury.

“Gallup will get a full slate of reps this week,” said Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy in a Wednesday news conference. “We’ll give him every opportunity to get ready.”

Gallup is recovering from a torn left ACL he suffered in Week 17 last season. He has been a limited participant in practice the first two weeks of this season. However, being a full participant in practice this week indicates his strength is starting to return.

This is a positive sign for the Cowboys because their offense needs a jolt.

The Cowboys' wide receiving corps includes rookie Jaylen Tolbert, who still is trying to get the hang of the pro game, and Noah Brown, who's inconsistent and has only one TD pass in his five-year career. WR James Washington, a free-agent signee in the offseason, has yet to play because of a fractured right foot.

Tight end Dalton Schultz’s status is unclear after he suffered a right knee sprain Sunday against the Bengals.

Gallup is more of a deep threat than Lamb, who is a possession receiver. In four seasons as a Cowboy, Gallup has averaged 15 yards per catch, tops for the team over that span.

That's especially good news for backup QB Cooper Rush, who needs weapons. He will start until Dak Prescott returns from a fracture to his right thumb.

The Cowboys play at the New York Giants on Monday.
