The Dallas Cowboys have two weeks to cut their roster down to 53.
But, the Cowboys still have holes at wide receiver and swing tackle that they need to fill.
The younger Cowboys have made good strides in the preseason, but it would still be risky trusting them early in the season.
That is why these two veteran players should be on the Cowboys’ radar.
2. Eric Fisher, Offensive Tackle
The current swing tackle on the Cowboys is Josh Ball.
He has not looked very good in training camp or the preseason and it would be a mistake to have him as their top backup.
That is where former Indianapolis Colt, Eric Fisher, enters the conversation.
The 31-year-old tackle started 15 games for the Colts last season.
At this point in free agency, Dallas should be looking for someone with experience.
Fisher has started 128 games in nine seasons, and he could step into the lineup at a moment’s notice and do a good job.
One issue with some of the Cowboys’ offensive linemen in the past is penalties.
Fisher committed six penalties last season, which was one fewer than Tyron Smith committed.
Speaking of Smith, he has not played a full season since 2015.
So, it is all but a lock that the swing tackle will need to be used at some point this season.
Now it is on the Cowboys to make sure that swing tackle is veteran Fisher, and not unproven Ball.
1. T.Y. Hilton, Wide Receiver
There are plenty of free agent receivers that could come in and help in Week 1.
But, T.Y. Hilton is the one that makes the most sense.
The long-time Colt has been bitten by the injury bug in recent years, but when on the field he can be effective.
Any of the free agent wide receivers at this point have some type of baggage, so finding one that can fill a role in Dallas would be ideal.
Hilton has 10 years of NFL experience, and he has the versatility to play both the slot and outside.
Dallas is not looking for Hilton to give them a full-season worth of production.
They just need him to be available for the first four or five weeks until Michael Gallup can return from injury.
Also, the 32-year-old would be the oldest receiver on the Cowboys roster.
So his experience could prove to be valuable to all the younger Cowboys.
The fact of the matter is Hilton would be the number two receiver behind CeeDee Lamb for the first few weeks of the season.
Dallas has to face both the Buccaneers and Bengals in the first two weeks so having a crafty veteran receiver, should help the offense in those games.
The Cowboys have plenty of cap space still available.
So signing these two players will be no problem for them.
More than likely one-year deals are on the table for both players and Dallas could probably get both for around $5 million each.
Addressing the two main weaknesses on the roster should be the most important thing for the Cowboys’ front office from now until Week 1.
