The Las Vegas Raiders have had a busy week with their Monday Night Football clash against the Baltimore Ravens approaching.
Following an offseason of debatable moves and some real headscratchers, the Raiders finalized their roster and yes, it did leave many wondering why certain players were let go. In particular, let’s take a look at the two biggest cuts this week.
Two biggest surprises from the Raiders this week…
Karl Joseph
The former West Virginia Mountaineer was a first-round pick of the Raiders in 2016. However, he never quite lived up to his draft position. In his defense, he’s had some memorable moments for the Silver and Black. 2019 comes to mind, during a three-game winning streak, he made two game-clinching plays.
He was a part of the Cleveland Browns last season and had an average season. When he re-signed this offseason, it seemed like a foregone conclusion he’d make the team. More so when you consider he would’ve been a good fit in Gus Bradley’s defensive system. Unfortunately, with a rebuilt secondary that’s filled with plenty of youth, the Raiders decided to move on.
As far as fans are concerned, many felt that Joseph could’ve helped with grooming that youth. This is especially true for Johnathan Abram, however, availability is the best ability sometimes. For Joseph, when we all saw him play in the final preseason game it appeared the writing was on the wall.
Following his cut, Joseph signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.
Derek Carrier
Now this one may not be as big of an impact because Carrier would’ve been the third tight end. Nevertheless, his familiarity with the team and offense does make it a surprise. He’s a real solid booking tight end and has shown he can make spot catches. In his stead, the Raiders opted to go with Nick Bowers as their third tight end.
Not all is lost for Carrier, however, as his return appears to be imminent according to Raiders brass. Again, I realize that this isn’t an earth-shattering move. Be that as it may, the fact that he’s a familiar face and a true Gruden Grinder, it did come as a surprise to see him initially released.
