The San Francisco 49ers’ quest to optimize their elite defense under the guidance of coordinator Steve Wilks has reached its conclusion.

In an unexpected conference call with journalists on Wednesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the dismissal of Wilks from his position as defensive coordinator after just one season. Despite boasting the third-best scoring defense in the league, many felt that the unit could have achieved even greater success.

The decision to part ways with Wilks is further underscored by the disappointment of the team’s collapse in Super Bowl 58 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nevertheless, the opportunity remains ripe for a new coordinator to step in and harness the exceptional talent still present on the defensive roster. Historically, the 49ers have seen their defensive coordinators ascend to head coaching positions elsewhere, as evidenced by the trajectories of Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans.

With the vacancy now open, speculation turns to who might be the ideal candidate to fill the role. Shanahan has indicated his willingness to explore both internal and external options, but let’s offer some suggestions.

Here are three potential candidates the San Francisco 49ers should consider to succeed Wilks as defensive coordinator.

3. Mike Pettine

Kyle Shanahan and current Minnesota Vikings defensive assistant, Mike Pettine, share a history dating back to their time with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. Despite the challenges faced during their tenure with the Browns, the connection between Shanahan and Pettine remains significant.

While Pettine’s coaching journeys since then have been varied and haven’t resulted in prolonged stays, his relationship with Shanahan could prove valuable in the current scenario. With experience as a coordinator and a focus on front-seven defense, Pettine’s background as a linebackers specialist adds depth to his coaching profile.

Moreover, considering the limited opportunities he may have left to pursue a head coaching position following his stint in Cleveland, leveraging the 49ers’ job as a potential pathway could be a strategic move.

Admittedly, Pettine’s track record as a coordinator includes some missteps, notably during his time with the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020. However, if the 49ers view these experiences as valuable learning opportunities, Pettine could align with their requirements.

2. Bill Belichick

The prospect of Bill Belichick, the esteemed former head coach of the New England Patriots, entering a new coaching role is a topic generating significant discussion. Despite his illustrious career and reputation as one of the NFL’s greatest coaches, the feasibility of such a move remains uncertain.

Following his departure from the Patriots, it’s evident that Belichick, now 71 years old, is in a transitional phase. While his tenure post-Tom Brady lacked the same dominance, his defensive prowess remained a cornerstone of his coaching acumen.

However, the reality must be considered. Belichick is unlikely to rush into any opportunity that comes his way. Instead, he may opt for a period of reflection, possibly even stepping away from the game entirely for a year or two.

Moreover, it’s improbable that Belichick would willingly accept a role perceived as a step down from his previous position as a head coach. While speculation persists, particularly regarding the San Francisco 49ers’ coaching vacancy, Belichick’s next move remains uncertain.

1. Mike Vrabel

Finally, we come to the best option that the 49ers must consider at the defensive coordinator position.

Mike Vrabel was shockingly passed over in the head coaching carousel. He was an excellent head coach for the Tennessee Titans, but mutually parted ways with the franchise this offseason.

While he’s a great head coach, Vrabel is most known for his defensive genius. That could be a great fit for the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan and Vrabel would also likely see eye-to-eye much more than Wilks did.

If the 49ers want to go big with their new defensive coordinator, Vrabel could be the perfect candidate.
