49ers' Brock Purdy discusses uncertain future of Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy spoke with Cam Inman of The Mercury News on Sunday about several topics, including the uncertain future of star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

"We’ve talked," Purdy said about Aiyuk. "I just told him I’ll always have his back and support him in whatever he does. I want the best for him. It’s a business thing, so for me to say anything about that, that’s out of my pay grade."

Aiyuk’s agent, Ryan Williams, took to X on Sunday and suggested a report that claimed Aiyuk has requested a trade is inaccurate. As NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted on Monday, though, Aiyuk may have said plenty when he recently unfollowed the 49ers on social media.

Aiyuk is in the final year of his rookie contract and presumably wants to get paid sooner rather than later. According to ESPN stats, he finished this past regular season leading the 49ers with 75 receptions, 105 targets and 1,342 receiving yards. He, fellow receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey all shared the team lead of seven touchdown receptions.

"He and I talk through things and I hear him out," Purdy added about Aiyuk. "At the end of the day, what he’s done for me, giving me an opportunity to come in and throw him the ball, I’ll always be thankful for that."

As Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk shared last week, San Francisco tight end George Kittle mentioned during an ESPN segment at The Masters that the 49ers "were fortunate enough to keep our entire offense so far" coming off the overtime 25-22 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. Purdy told Inman he's "excited" at the thought of the club returning every noteworthy offensive starter from this past season.

"For us, we’re always going to think we can get it to another level," Purdy said. "I know guys like Christian, George and Deebo are all thinking like that. The fact we’ve all played together for a year and a half, that gives us a lot of confidence."

As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 49ers second (+600) behind only the Chiefs (+550) to win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025. One wonders if San Francisco trading Aiyuk would impact such odds.
