49ers' Brock Purdy remaining humble amid MVP-caliber season

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is remaining humble even as he's emerged as a legitimate candidate to earn Most Valuable Player votes coming off Sunday's 42-19 thrashing of the Philadelphia Eagles that improved the 49ers to 9-3.

"I’m definitely thankful for it all, man," Purdy told NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "I don’t come into the building one day and think I’m the man, that I’ve done this or that. I have such a great supporting cast and a great system, great coaching, very thankful for all of it. I look around and I see other quarterbacks and their situations. To be here at this time with these guys, it’s very special. I’m always going to be appreciative of that."

The last time Purdy played at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the NFC Championship Game in January. His arm may now be stronger than ever before, and he completed 19-of-27 pass attempts for 314 yards and four touchdowns in Sunday's blowout win over the Eagles.

David Purdum of ESPN noted on Monday that ESPN BET currently has Purdy as the favorite to win the MVP Award. As of Monday afternoon, oddschecker listed Purdy second among the betting favorites at +650 odds to claim MVP honors. Jalen Hurts of the Eagles topped the list at +350 odds at that time.

Per ESPN stats, Purdy began Monday leading the NFL with a 75.6 adjusted QBR (tied with Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys), a 116.1 passer rating, a 70.2% completion percentage and an average of 9.6 yards per pass attempt on the campaign. He's fourth in the league with 23 touchdowns through the air.

"When you think about that game and you watch film, there’s always the what-ifs and what-could’ve-beens, if I’d have stayed healthy," Purdy acknowledged while speaking with Breer. "The human nature side of it is, 'Man, I could have done something with that game.' It is what it is. It happened. It hurt for all of us. To come into this game, same place, sort of like a prime-time game, the environment’s just breathing down your neck and then to be able to perform how we needed to perform and to throw the ball for a whole game, I’m just thankful for it, more than anything."

As of Monday, oddschecker had the Niners as the betting favorites at +430 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII in February. Purdy and company will look to win a fifth straight game when they host the 6-6 Seattle Seahawks this coming Sunday.
