49ers CEO hints that both Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance will be back with San Francisco

Quarterback drama is nothing new in the NFL; however, the situation in San Francisco doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo was expected to be traded or released from the 49ers to make way for upstart Trey Lance. Although, both quarterbacks remain on San Francisco's roster as we head into April.

49ers CEO Jed York spoke with NBC Sports Bay Area's Jennifer Lee Chan about the team's quarterback predicament, comparing it to another infamous quarterback battle in San Francisco.

When asked if Garoppolo and Lance could remain on the team for another season, York brought up 49ers Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, who famously sat behind another legend, Joe Montana, for several seasons before taking over the No. 1 spot in San Francisco.

"It's professional sports," York said. "If Steve Young can sit on the bench for four seasons — Steve Young is a Hall of Famer. If he's willing to do it, and he has the competitive will to do it, why can't somebody else?"

York continued by saying he would take the position the 49ers are in now "any day."

"I think those two drove each other in the late '80s and early '90s to be the best that they could possibly be," York continued. "If that's the situation that we have and that's what is created, sign me up for that problem any day."

York's comments put lofty expectations on both Garoppolo and Lance, as, unlike Montana and Young, they haven't won Super Bowls as starters nor are their careers on a Hall of Fame trajectory.

In 15 games last season, Garoppolo went 9-6, completed 68.3 of his passes for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Garoppolo is entering the final season of a five-year, $137.5 million contract. He's due to make a $24.2 million base salary this season, with a cap hit of $26.9 million.

Meanwhile, Lance has three years remaining on a four-year, $34.1 million contract. In 2022, Lance is scheduled to make $2.2 million with a $9.3 million cap hit. Last season, Lance played in six games, starting two, finishing 1-1 with a 57.7 completion percentage, five touchdowns and two interceptions.
