49ers end OTAs, cancel mandatory minicamp after injuries

The San Francisco 49ers had a rough Monday of organized team activities. Offensive lineman Justin Skule tore his ACL, and safety Tarvarius Moore ruptured his Achilles during the same session.

Those setbacks coupled with running back Jeff Wilson Jr. going down to a torn meniscus inside the team's locker room on May 20 was more than enough for head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Shanahan confirmed Wednesday the Niners won't have any additional OTAs and have also canceled their mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 15-17.

"We're totally done," Shanahan told reporters. "My plan was to get eight and then I was going to surprise them on Thursday and take everyone bowling, but after our seventh practice with those two injuries and just the aura it gave to it, I wasn't going to come back and do one more just to do one more. So I surprised them on Day 8 instead of Day 9."

Earlier in the day, the Houston Texans called off their mandatory minicamp also set to occur June 15-17. Head coach David Culley explained he and team leaders previously agreed to scrap camp if he was happy with the attendance and participation he saw during voluntary OTAs.

According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles canceled their mandatory minicamps earlier in the offseason.

While the Green Bay Packers are seemingly using minicamp as the latest stage for the standoff between the club's management and dissatisfied quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the 49ers are among franchises that realize more can be lost in mid-June than gained on practice fields.
