49ers' George Kittle has 'no idea' what will happen with Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance

As things stand a little over three days before the start of the 2022 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers still have veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and 2021 rookie Trey Lance on their roster.

It's assumed Garoppolo won't be traded before the draft, in part because he's recovering from the March surgery he needed to repair a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder, and the 30-year-old remarked last week he is "just going to let the chips fall where they may and work my ass off like I always do" regarding his future.

Per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone, San Francisco All-Pro tight end George Kittle admitted during the latest edition of the "I Am Athlete" podcast he's unsure of what is to come for both Garoppolo and Lance.

"We don't know what's going to happen with Jimmy," Kittle said. "I have no idea. I find out on Twitter like everybody else. I think the year that Jimmy is traded or something happens there, or even if Jimmy is on the team, the year that Trey spent with him is very beneficial."

Kittle was asked who he would rather see atop the depth chart in September if both Garoppolo and Lance are on the roster at that time.

"I'm kind of 50-50, right in the middle, honestly," he responded. "Jimmy, he's a fantastic leader. We almost won a Super Bowl. We've been to the NFC Championship twice in three seasons. And then you look at Trey—I think Trey's got one of the highest ceilings I've ever seen before. Some of the things you see him do on the football field, you're like, 'Holy cow. I can't wait until he throws me passes.'

"I want whoever's going to be the better quarterback this season. And it is a business at the end of the day. We're just monetary values, really, like cogs in the machine. I do trust [head coach] Kyle Shanahan. I think he's going to pick the best quarterback. I don't have a preference. I don't. I think I like them both. They're both good guys. They both bring different things to the table. It's just what do you want to play with?"

Previously, 49ers general manager John Lynch and CEO Jed York suggested they'd rather keep Garoppolo for another season even as a backup than cut him and lose him for nothing this spring or summer. There's currently no indication any team will send San Francisco a valuable asset for Jimmy G's services before or during the draft.
