49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo provides major update on injured foot

On Friday, Jimmy Garoppolo provided an update on his foot injury and his status moving forward should the San Francisco 49ers advance to the Super Bowl with a win this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

Speaking with Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Garoppolo said he can do everything "but sprint" on his healing foot.

Ahead of last week's divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo had a better chance at playing in the Super Bowl than the NFC title game. While Garoppolo is obviously out this Sunday, there's still an outside chance that he's ready for the Super Bowl, should the Niners advance. When asked if he's still on pace to be available on Feb. 12, Garoppolo said it's "still up in the air."

Regardless of Garoppolo's availability, it's hard to believe he'd be behind center in the Super Bowl, barring an injury to Brock Purdy. Garoppolo has been out of action since Week 13, and if he is ready to return, it'll likely be as a backup.

It's been a tumultuous season for Garoppolo, who entered the campaign with an uncertain, at best, future in San Francisco. However, a season-ending injury to second-year quarterback Trey Lance in Week 2 forced Garoppolo into action.

The 49ers went 7-3 in Garoppolo's starts this season. He posted a 67.2 completion percentage, throwing for 2,437 yards, with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

The 31-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
