Chris Streveler reportedly tried out for the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday while his old team apparently doesn't see a need to bring back the quarterback.
Streveler injured his hand while playing for the Jets in the Hall of Fame Game on August 3 and was subsequently released four days later. As the preseason hero attempts a comeback bid, and looks for a home in the NFL, the Jets are standing pat when it comes to their quarterbacks room.
Jets' third-year head coach Robert Saleh once again publicly endorsed Zach Wilson as the starter in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers.
"We’re talking [about potential changes]. Nothing with the quarterback, nothing with the play caller," said Saleh. "We’re just looking at things with regards to schematically, the things that we can do differently."
Wilson accounted for 317 yards of total offense in the Week 10 road loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished 23-of-39 passing for 263 yards and one interception.
"I feel like he played a good game yesterday. Obviously, he’ll admit that he would want that interception back, but it is hard to make changes just to make changes, just to pacify something," said Saleh. "To say that one person is the reason for everyone failing, I don’t think that’s fair."
Although there are multiple factors responsible for the results, the Jets' offense has been in a scoring rut with Wilson at the controls. They have not scored a touchdown in their last 11 quarters. In addition to sporting the league's lowest touchdown percentage in the redzone, the Jets rank third from the bottom in points per game (16.0).
Wilson has thrown only one touchdown pass, a 50-yard screen to Breece Hall, over his past five games. The former No. 2 overall draft pick is responsible for five TD passes and six interceptions through nine games.
"Football is the greatest team game in the world, right? It's never one person's fault," said tight end Tyler Conklin on Monday.
Meanwhile, Streveler was a preseason sensation two summers ago. He accounted for a 120.9 passer rating, a 72.7 completion percentage and five touchdown passes in three appearances.
Streveler took 31 regular season snaps at quarterback last year, all coming in the December loss to Jacksonville. He went 10-of-15 passing for 90 yards and added 54 yards on the ground.
Behind Wilson, veteran Tim Boyle is the lone other field general on the Jets' 53-man roster. Trevor Siemian remains on the Practice Squad.
