49ers offer wide receivers coach position to Leonard Hankerson?

The 49ers are looking within for their next wide receivers coach.

San Francisco has offered the job to current quality control coach Leonard Hankerson, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Wes Welker, the team's previous wide receivers coach, left for Miami along with former 49ers offensive coordinator and new Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel earlier this month.

Hankerson played five seasons in the NFL after a prolific college career at Miami (FL). He was drafted in the third round by Washington in 2011 and played there for four years, but struggled to find consistent footing in the league due to consistent injuries. He played for Atlanta, New England and Buffalo in 2015 before hanging them up.

In 2016, Hankerson accepted a job coaching in the high school ranks. He then jumped to UMass as a grad assistant in 2017 before signing on full-time as wide receivers coach the following season. He hopped south to Stephen F. Austin in 2019, where he'd work as wide receivers coach for two seasons.

He came to the NFL in 2021 when he joined head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff as an offensive quality control coach. Hankerson played under Shanahan for three years when he was with Washington, where Shanahan was his offensive coordinator.
