49ers Pro Bowl C Alex Mack agrees to pay cut, still considering retirement

It was reported last week that San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl center Alex Mack was skipping the start of the team's voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) and had not yet decided on his future. There's no word yet on if the 13-year pro will be back for the 2022 campaign, but there was news on Mack's contract with the club that came out on Thursday morning.

Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, "former Browns center JC Tretter is the top available free agent at the position, but the 49ers could also look for a trade when and if Mack announces he’s done playing football." Mack is 36 years old, while Tretter turned 31 in February.

Mack made his seventh Pro Bowl last season and started every one of the team's 20 games, including their three playoff contests. He was limited to five games in 2014 due to a broken fibula and missed two games in 2020 with a concussion and then while on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but aside from that, has suited up every week.

A product of the University of California, Mack was selected 21st overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and spent the first seven years of his career with the team. He signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons in March 2016 and signed a three-year, $14.85 million deal with the Niners in March 2021.

Mack earned Second Team All-Pro honors in 2013, 2016 and 2017.
