San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are in a tough spot when it comes to the quarterback position. The rest of the roster is ready to compete and it looked like Brock Purdy was going to be the future at the quarterback position. Then he got injured in the NFC Championship Game. Now, a recent report suggested he could miss the entire 2023 season.

San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy Could Miss 2023

During a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Purdy was asked if he would be able to play during the upcoming season and he confessed that he was “not really sure, honestly.” He went on to elaborate a little bit more which provided a little bit more optimism.

“It’s going well,” Purdy said of his recovery in an interview with CBS Sports. “Just taking it one day at a time. Just trying to heal up and feel a little bit better every single day, and it’s all gone as planned. Obviously we’re in great communication with the doctors that I’m working with, the Niners, the organization as a whole, everyone’s on the same page and we’re excited for how it’s going. So just taking it one day at a time.”

One day at a time. The recovery process seems long and grueling. The elbow is an important part of throwing so it has to be fully healthy for him to even begin tossing a ball. There seems to be a real risk that Purdy will not be available.

Options At Quarterback

On the roster are Trey Lance and Sam Darnold. Lance seems like the obvious default pick but Kyle Shanahan could also make someone like Darnold look good. Both are unknowns, but the rest of the roster is so strong, the quarterback play just needs to be passable. They could explore the trade market. Rumors have been swirling about Aaron Rodgers to the 49ers as the Jets and Packers do not seem to be able to come to an agreement. Ryan Tannehill would also be a name to watch. Regardless, the team is still hoping that Purdy will be healthy for the start of the season.

This is not what you want to hear if you are the San Francisco 49ers. They are hoping to make a Super Bowl run and might have to do it with a completely unproven quarterback. The rest of the team is going to have to be perfect or they may have to make a big swing in the trade market.
