49ers reportedly keeping No. 3 pick guarded with 'extraordinary levels of secrecy'

The San Francisco 49ers have the third pick in the draft and head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are both going above in beyond in not revealing who they are going to take.

"The 49ers’ decision regarding that #3 pick is completely sealed," The Athletic's David Lombardi tweeted. "It’s only with Shanahan and Lynch. Not even the coordinators and assistants, who’ve been in draft meetings, know. Extraordinary levels of secrecy have set the table for this dramatic draft day finish."

On the one hand, it makes sense that a team would want to go out of its way to protect who it plans to pick in the draft. But, realistically, it arguably wouldn't really matter even if the 49ers revealed exactly who they are taking, as there's no virtually no secrecy as to who the Jaguars and Jets are taking with the top two picks. However, Lynch and Shanahan likely have their reasons for wanting to keep their pick under wraps.

The 49ers are expected to take a quarterback with the pick, but there is some uncertainty over who exactly they are going to take. It was initially believed they had their eye on former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones but some believe that they could go after Trey Lance or Justin Fields.
