49ers: Shanahan never had plan to play Trey Lance vs. Eagles
With all the hype about Trey Lance ahead of Week 1, many believed the 49ers wouldn't hesitate to insert the rookie quarterback under center in place of veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
But even with Garoppolo being slow to get going in Week 2's comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Kyle Shanahan never considered throwing Lance into the game. At least, that's what he told the press on Monday:
"No, I never have a plan that ‘Hey, I’m going to use him or I’m not to use him,'" Shanahan said, via David Lombardi of The Athletic. "It’s been two games and I’ve never had him in the openers and I’ve never had him as a designated time."
The Niners trailed the Eagles 3-0 for most of the first half before Garoppolo got dialed in and threw a touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings to make it 7-3 at the half. The 29-year-old QB ended the day completing 22 of 30 passes 189 and the touchdown to Jennings, as well as tallying 11 carries for 20 yards and scoring his own rushing touchdown.
San Francisco, which now sits at 2-0 on the season, will now prepare for its Week 3 matchup against the visiting Green Bay Packers, who themselves are looking to rebound on Monday night from an embarrassing 38-3 loss to the Saints in Week 1.
