49ers' Trey Lance: 'It's not my job to care' what reporters, fans say

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is about to enter his second NFL season and will likely officially be named the team's new starter at some point this summer. While Lance hasn't yet had adequate opportunities to prove himself ahead of veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, the 22-year-old has seen his name in headlines since February because of supposed concerns some within the 49ers organization may have about his ability to win the biggest games beginning in September.

With Garoppolo continuing to recover from the shoulder surgery he underwent in March, Lance has been serving as San Francisco's QB1 during organized team activities. Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Lance recently spoke with Bay Area media members and let it be known he's doing his best to tune outside noise out.

"In the most respectful way possible, it doesn't change how I feel about you guys as people, but it's not my job to care what you guys say or anyone else on social media," Lance remarked. "For me, I care about what the guys in the locker room think and what my coaching staff thinks."

As a rookie, Lance completed 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. While it's possible the 49ers could keep Garoppolo on the roster if no team trades for him once he can resume throwing, it's expected Lance will be atop the depth chart before preseason games begin.
