The San Francisco 49ers have made a corresponding move to fit veteran defensive back Logan Ryan on the 53-man roster, waiving former third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price.

San Francisco is signing Ryan to its active roster following a successful workout, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

The versatile Ryan will add crucial depth at safety and Rapoport reported it is Davis-Price who will make way for the two-time Super Bowl champion after failing to make an impact during his brief time with the 49ers.

Eyebrows were raised when San Francisco spent a third-rounder on the former LSU star, a year after trading up in the same round to select Trey Sermon out of Ohio State. Sermon is no longer on the roster.

The bemusement at his selection has been vindicated. Davis-Price, in part owing to injuries, played just six games last season and had only 99 yards on 34 carries. In truth, his hopes of having any tangible influence as a rookie were ended by the 49ers' midseason trade for Christian McCaffrey.

When healthy late in the 2022 campaign, Davis-Price was the fourth back on the depth chart having been outshone by undrafted free agent signing Jordan Mason.

Though he made the 53-man roster for this year, he remained in that same spot behind McCaffrey, Mason and Elijah Mitchell, and was on the inactive list for every game save for the Week 5 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Should he clear waivers, Davis-Price could be signed back to the 49ers' practice squad. The 49ers do, though, already have a running back, Jeremy McNichols, on their 17-man practice squad.
