The NFL Draft is just over a week away and the Dallas Cowboys will need to nail it if they're to improve after a very quiet 2024 free agency.
As we enter the final stretch of getting to know their potential draft targets, I realized many of them had been compared to former Cowboys by our very own film expert James Foster on his 2024 Draft Big Board.
Below are four Day 1 and Day 2 prospects compared to current and former Cowboys.
WR Adonai Mitchell, Texas
- NFL Comp: CeeDee Lamb
- Projected round: Late first - early second
It's not easy to understand why Mitchell is drawing comparisons to Lamb as he's got - in the words of A to Z Sports Film Room analyst James Foster - speed, size, and fluidity you can't teach.
Mitchell's route-running and catch radius will likely make him a Top 40 pick. The biggest difference with Lamb, though, is that Mitchell arrives at the NFL with mediocre college production whereas the former Sooner lit up the Big 12 for years.
RB Trey Benson, Florida State
- NFL Comp: DeMarco Murray
- Projected round: Late second - third
Benson has often times fell to the Cowboys' third-round pick in many mock drafts and if he makes it that far, he'll be a no-brainer selection for the Cowboys.
Benson's very good vision and patience as well as his physicality earned him a comp to DeMarco Murray, who in 2014 received All-Pro honors.
LB Junior Colson, Florida State
- NFL Comp: Sean Lee
- Projected round: Late second - third
Colson's comp to Sean Lee likely arises from the fact that he's a high-IQ defender with great instincts. And I'm not sure there's a better way to describe Sean Lee than by describing him as an "instinctual" linebacker.
Foster describes Colson as a player that has "quick play diagnosis & fit recognition" and that "recognizes screens & sifts through traffic." Edgerrin Cooper and Payton Wilson might be better overall prospects but Colson would be a solid Day 2 draft pick.
OC Zach Frazier, West Virginia
- NFL Comp: Tyler Biadasz
- Projected round: Second
Although other centers might jump out the board thanks to their athleticism and physical traits, Frazier's mental skills set him apart and could make him a first-round prospect when the draft kicks off next week.
He's an "intelligent & aware center (who) makes Mike IDs & deciphers stunts efficiently," per Foster. Such strengths made him be compared to Tyler Biadasz, who impressed teammates as a rookie so much that he was then compared to Travis Frederick.
