Aaron Rodgers is looking to make an insane comeback

According to a report from Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, Aaron Rodgers underwent an "innovative" surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon in hopes of making a remarkable comeback this season.

While the technique comes with risks, it has reaped positive benefits recently.

In 2021, Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers, thought to have a season-ending Achilles tear, miraculously returned to play in Super Bowl LVI later that year. However, Akers had his rehab accelerated by the exact procedure Rodgers underwent, performed by the same surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Speaking with Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo Sports in 2022, ElAttrache explained that after suturing Akers' tendon together, he added what he called an "internal brace," providing extra protection against a re-tear while opening up the possibility of quicker healing.

Several realities go against Rodgers' rosy outlook. Akers returned to action 173 days after his surgery. With 147 days between now and Super Bowl LVIII, Rodgers would need to outdo Akers' timetable by a significant margin.

Furthermore, age will also be an important factor. Akers was 22 years old and only playing in his second NFL season at the time of his injury. Meanwhile, Rodgers turns 40 in December with nearly two decades of pro football weighing on his body.

Rodgers sounds confident, having egged on his doubters during a recent appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show." However, while it might be a nice thought for Jets fans to believe an improbable Rodgers comeback in time to help them win a Super Bowl is possible, it's likely a pipe dream.

If there's a silver lining for the Jets, it sounds like Rodgers is motivated to return in 2024. Fair or not, that's probably the best they can hope for.
