Aaron Rodgers on Packers' struggles: 'Guys who are making too many mistakes shouldn't be playing'
Things are not going well for the Green Bay Packers at the moment.
They are 3-4 on the season, have lost three games in a row, have been a mess on offense despite the return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers for another season, and have a brutal matchup looming on Sunday night at the Buffalo Bills.
So what's been the biggest source of their struggles? In Rodgers' mind, it's about mental mistakes. His solution? The players that are making them maybe shouldn't be getting as many snaps.
"Guys who are making too many mistakes shouldn't be playing," said Rodgers during his regular appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." "Gotta start cutting some reps."
Rodgers added that the team is routinely making double-digit mental mistakes per game when in previous years it was maybe seven mistakes at most.
Rodgers also added that quarterbacks coach Tom Clements gave him his highest individual grade of the season against Washington on Sunday and that maybe the team should be giving some looks to backups elsewhere on the roster.
So, basically, Rodgers is saying to not look at him for the team's struggles.
The Packers' roster construction around Rodgers has been a major talking point in recent years as the team has prioritized drafting defense (and his potential replacement, Jordan Love) with high picks in recent years. This offseason, the team traded superstar wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders, taking yet another key player away from him.
The 39-year-old Rodgers is coming off back-to-back MVP seasons and is still one of the league's elite quarterbacks. As long as he is in a Green Bay uniform the team should have Super Bowl aspirations. They are not anywhere close to that level right now, and the frustration seems to be mounting.
If they lose a fourth straight game on Sunday night things might really start to boil over.
