Aaron Rodgers reportedly wants new contract from Packers

After the Packers lost to the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, Aaron Rodgers spoke cryptically about his future in Green Bay, causing some to wonder if the veteran quarterback might demand a trade this offseason. But according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Rodgers wants to stay in Green Bay, as long as the team gives him a new contract.

Rodgers is coming off what many consider to be his best season as a pro, completing over 70% of his passes while throwing 48 touchdowns and five interceptions, likely earning him his third MVP award. And despite being 37, Rodgers still looks like he has a lot left in the tank, as the Packers came excruciatingly close to beating the Bucs in Sunday's game.

Yet under his current contract, Rodgers is paid far more like an average quarterback than an All-Pro. Rodgers will earn $22.35 million in 2021, $25.5 million in 2022, and $25.5 million in 2023. That puts him far behind the likes of Patrick Mahomes ($45 million), Deshaun Watson ($39 million), and even Ben Roethlisberger ($34 million).

And according to Florio, the contract demand could force Green Bay to decide sooner rather than later whether they are committed to Rodgers for the rest of his career, as the team trading up in the first round to draft Jordan Love remains the elephant in the room.

"If Rodgers officially asks for a new contract, he’ll definitely get one thing: Clarity as to where he stands," Florio wrote. "A new deal means renewed vows. No new deal means the clock will still tick toward a potential, if not inevitable, divorce."
